editing a moving image sequence guide

I used the brief to edit my footage due to the fact that i knew what my client wanted me to add in and what he wanted me to not add in. i had to listen attentively to my clients requests.
by adding match on action, eye-line match, 180 degree rule, color grading and so on. this was necessary because this shows i understand that match on action shows flow and continuity also that eye-line match shows the camera at eye level and finally that 180 degree rule it too keep the straight line and is continuity which show invisible editing.

I used organisation of timescale and dead lines to edit my footage. this was because i knew when each project was due. so i managed my time wisely by working and constructing the work in steps so i could 1: understand what am doing
2: finish the work quicker
this was necessary because the client had set a due date and there will be no excuses it i did not finish the sequence in time.

i viewed the rushes so i would be able to see what takes to use and which ones where right for me to include in the guide. i also had to pick out the ones that were good and not good so i would know which to use and which i would be able to edit to get continuity/flow. for example scene 1 take 4 and scene 2 take 1 were used to edit the guide.
then when i had viewed the rushes i could then import the one i wanted this helped me move to logging of scenes, shot and takes. i had to log each footage to know which take and shot  and scene they were and to also know which ones were good and which were bad.

purpose video

Montage:
This is where the editor who is in charge of editing scenes, cuts down a scene that will would take days, months and even years to film and cuts it down into a few minutes. This is known as a Hollywood montage. It is used to show progression in a character also it’s used to move forward in time. A good example of this is the team America training scene, as he goes through training it speeds up so that it will only last one minute and nineteen seconds when in real life it would have lasted  months. We see him progress every time, as he started off as a newbie and then progressed to the point that he could even beat he’s master. Montage allows the editor to add more footage to the film. It creates more space for other scenes to occur.

Cross cutting:
This is where the editor cuts from one action to another in different locations to show that they are all happening  at the same time. This is known as cross cutting. A good example of this is in the star film. We see cross cuts of different locations but they are all linked together. Just like we see here it starts off with the characters in some sort of HQ then it cross cuts to the scene that is occurring outside the HQ. From that it goes to another scene in a different location further away from the HQ and finally we end up back in the HQ to see what happened when those men ran from the outside into the HQ. This is used for continuity to show the audience different views of the same event. It allows the editor to experiment with different ideas on how to portray the scene to the audience.

Slow-motion:
This is where the editor slows down real life action. This is known as slow motion. It is where a scene is slowed down to make it dramatic for the audience. A good example of this is in the film inception, they use slow motion to show the impact of the explosions and how massive they. Also slow motion is used in the inception to show that they are in a dream world, so everything is slowed down however they are still moving in normal speed. This allows the audience to feel the impact of the explosions and allows the editors change the pace of things, to give the audience some time to look at everything as with a slow motion they can rest their eyes and take time to look at every detail.

Jump-cut

This is where there is a brake in continuity, a flash of a character. It gives the effect of jumping forward in time. It was first introduce by George milies, he used it for special effects. A good example of this is the film fight club. In the film fight club the purpose of the breaking 180 degree rule (jump cut) was to show the situations and problems the main character was having, such as not being able to fall asleep. Also it was used to show paranormal activity. As u can see in the screen shots below, in the scene people hardly notice the man appear and quickly disappear. It allows the audience to be interested in what that quick flash was. It Creates suspense.

Cuts:

This is where the editor cuts from one scene to another. This is known as cutting. It was originally taking a roll of film and physically cutting bits and sticking them together. This was used back in the days in Edwin porter’s days. A good example of this is in the film avengers. The purpose of using cuts in the avenger’s film was to see three different action events. When Thor one of the characters says ‘is that the best you got’, and it cuts to the scene where ultron minions start attacking the avengers. This carries on the story and helps the audience understand what happing or what is going to happen next.
Split screen:
This is where the editor takes two separate footages and joins it to make one. It is also a division of the screen showing two things at the same time. A good example of this would be in the snatch cousin Avi film. The purpose of using a split screen in the cousin avi film was to show the conversation of the two men that are in two different locations. As it allows the audience to see bought perspective at the same time it also makes it easier for the creators of the film to film. What I mean is that instead of going back and forth with the conversation (which would be longer to edit) i is easier to just put in a split screen this way you can add in more footage like the Hollywood montage.

180 degree rule:

This is where the editor establishes and maintains the screen direction of their action or actors in the scene. This is known as the 180 degree rule (continuity editing) (invisible editing). The 180 degree rule was used when the man opened the first door in the  Continuity Sequence - Step by Step video, then we see the man again however we see him from the inside of the building opening the second door. This is to show flow and to show that the man did not just disappear has he walked through the first door. This allows the audience to be engaged in the scene.

cutting to a beat:
this is were editors over-lap audio (music) and footage together and making sure the footage changes when the music changes. a good example of this is the ' we come one faithless music video.
the purpose of cutting to the beat is to follow the song so we (the audience) are engaged in the video and would find the music video more interesting to watch.

NIKE ADVERT :WEEK 4 H/W:

 Age: 16-30
Gender: male
Ethnicity: black and white
ABC: c2, c1 and D
Psychographic: mainstreamers and aspires
The advert is promoting the upcoming EUFA CHAMPIONSHIP for 2008
The ad is targeting mainstreamers and aspirers. The purpose of the advert is for people to feel involved in the EUFA championship that’s why they used a first person angle so the audience can feel like they are there.
The persuasive technique they used is emotional manipulation. They used jealousy and emulation (to copy) to get their audience interested and to make this video go viral. They made people feel like if they didn’t come to the EUFA championship game they wouldn’t have that first person experience. They wouldn’t get the girls or the fame or even get to play with the players, even though all of this is also an exaggeration, it still affects the audience emotionally.
It’s appealing to mainstreamers because mainstreamers are those who like to follow the crowd. And by using shots such as this one it makes us (the audience) feel like we are the one high fiving the player and if they are there like everyone else is they will miss out. Also it is appealing to aspirers as they like to appear rich and they (aspire to be.....), so by showing this shot will get the aspirers thinking about going so they too can have that fame as well.

Age: 16-20
Gender: male and female
Ethnicity: white
ABC: c1
Psychographic: mainstreamers
The advert is promoting the 3 sim-card.
The ad is targeting mainstreamers and the purpose of the advert is for people to make their own and share it with everyone so it will go viral and bring in a larger audience.
The persuasive technique they used is humor and it makes you want to sing along and the song makes you happy.
It’s appealing to mainstreamers because it has a link at the bottom so you can make your own and share it with people. And mainstreamers are those who like to follow the crowd.
The fact that the cat can sing and the NISE-EN-SCENE they used such has lighting, location and affects the audience emotionally. This is because it is unique and unusual it’s something people haven’t seen before. And the song they chose was a very catchy song that everyone knew and they could sing along to it. It was also an up lifting song.

How are teenagers represented in teen dramas?

In teen dramas teenagers are seen has ignored, misunderstood, careless , unhappy and dangerous youths. They are represented in a ill-mannered way  meaning that hey are represented has as thugs and hooligans.

in this shot of skins series three we see a long shot of the two girls who are teenagers. they shot and their clothing represents them as trouble makers. The location is a pub and for teens like them it a chance for them to be independent and go crazy. this shows them to be irresponsible and loud.
in this shot of skins series three we see and over the shoulder shot of this teenager the shot makes the teenager look intimidating and rude. the hoodie and snap-back makes him look like someone with no respect and like someone with attitude problems. they way he is dressed makes him look like a thug like a '' Gang Banger '' which is what must teens are seen has today. In the shot blocking is used. we can see the boy at the back. this shows that he really isn't important as he can hardly be seen.
