self evaluation

Here is my self-assessment of my ident, which also includes my audience and my client research. The first thing I will be discussing about are the technical strengths of my ident and why they were the strengths.
The biggest strength was the animation technique used, which was stop motion animation the effect was well used as it was full motion mixed up with stock motion sequence particularly with the text ‘YEN.TV’. This technique was used because it was part of the conventions of making an ident; it was what you needed to make an ident. Also it is more engaging to use this kind of technique with 16-25 year old as they are engaged by fast pace editing and something unusual to keep them interested. The reason this is appealing to the audience is because the audience will be kept interested and they will be engaged by the fast editing technique. After looking at my survey I found that 80% of the audience liked the animation technique and they thought it was smooth and it kept them interested.
The second technical strength is the editing and how it worked with the music. This is known as beat editing and how it works is that as the beat of the music changes the footage on screen changes as well, this stimulates creativity for the audience and this is suitable for the brand of the channel because the channel’s identity is freedom (this was identified by 60% of the audience in the audience feedback) and the channel is a black culture channel; I know that black people  love they beats and their music and they love to see things work together , so by using beat editing I am appealing/connecting to my target audience. I have done so by splitting each moving sequence into freeze frames to portray the effect of stop motion animation. And then I have cut the images to size to make them change every time the beat changes. at the beginning of the Ident the music is quite calm, I was able to count the amount of times the next beat will come in which permitted me to fit in each shot/frame/picture in the ident. Also we while shooting the logo we titled the screen to give a shaky effect which fitted perfected and 60% of the audience said they liked that idea.

The last technical strength was the effects filters. The filters I used for my ident was the colour coordination which was used throughout the whole ident. The first colour I used was the colour purple; it was the main colour of the ident and linked with giving our channel an identity. Also the colour purple connotes freedom and that is what i  wanted my audience to feel and for them to create an identity for themselves as black youths. my colour was developed form the channel E4. 1 used the editing tool to change the saturation and the brightness; darkness of the image then we would chose a colour and this was how i did the filters towards the end of the ident i used multiple colours, to appeal to the none black-cultured audiences. This was used to keep my audience engaged and the survey says that 100% of the felt that the ident appealed to them.

Although there have been some good strengths in the ident there are also some weaknesses.
Firstly the actors/dancers that i chose, i really didn’t want them to all be black but when i looked back at my ideas and my plans i saw that this needed to be changed, so i got all black actors and dancers instead. This was good because the black actors; dancers can appeal to the 16-25 year old black audience.

Another weak was that i had to change my location during production time. i had my mind set on filming next to a wall and show both the actors/dancers with the logo, however i couldn’t because while filming there where so many distraction with people walking through the camera shots and noise in the background. So i moved to filming in a collage car park. This was not ideal for the branding of the channel as i wasn't reaching the 25 year old audiences as they would be in university and not college. Also i had to stop every time a car had to pull out.

Lastly i had to change my choice of music form electronic music at first but electronic music didn’t sit well with my focus group they thought it would be better to have African music so it would appeal to the specific target audience.

So overall, the music was suitable , there’s a good choice of music considering the genre I picked for the editing pace of the stop motion, it was in sync for instance the first transition between the dancing and the pictures. The music not only makes the editing flow but it also attracts the target audience. As mentioned from the expert; agreed with the beat editing and motion, the expert enjoyed the transition, cuts, and colour. On the other hand both the expert and my target audience were appalled by the duration of the ident and how the music cuts off to early enabling the music to conclude as it just finished. For improvements, I could bring the clip to a conclusion in the real world because it. From the feedback the audience liked the effect of the outside shots were filmed good the graphical look was outstanding and more effective on the text.

The biggest thing to improve will be the duration of the ident, which has been mentioned quite allot by my target audience and the expert. Furthermore, even though I wanted to stick with a specific time of 10 seconds which I manage to achieve it still wasn’t enough, the Ident is good and creative but from the ending it seems rush and concluded instead it ended almost like a cliff hanger. Improving this wouldn’t only make it professional but it will support the branding of the channel by for instance showing my logo in the ident more than once so it is memorable and recognizable. The colours were too bright, some effects were possibly too much to see, this isn’t good because it could be difficult for those who are slow or have disabilities to understand or view the whole ident. So, if this was published in the real world you obviously cannot go back to watch therefore it has to be clear, quick and interesting.
